Migration and Protection Advisor (Copenhagen based with frequent overseas travel)

Danish Red Cross’, International Department is recruiting for an experienced and motivated Migration & Protection Adviser to support its international operations in conflict affected and fragile locations around the world. Based in Copenhagen you will undertake frequent travel to provide advisory support to our staff in Danish Red Cross Country Offices and our partner National Societies.
The purpose of the Migration & Protection Advisor position is to support the strategic direction and ambitions of Danish Red Cross (DRC) within migration and protection and to provide technical support, including capacity-development, and quality assurance to DRC supported interventions comprising migration and protection. The position supports the overall migration and protection capacity of DRC, including development and dissemination of operational policies and guidelines and provides guidance to country operations, including as is the technical focal point for the Pathways to Protection Programme (P2P), which is a multi-country programme partnering with Red Cross Red Crescent-National Societies in Mali, Niger, Egypt and Sudan.
Based in Copenhagen, the Advisor is part of the Migration, Protection & Climate Team in the Technical Quality & Impact Unit. The team comprises technical advisors that support the strategic ambitions of DRC within migration and protection and ensures that the requisite capacities are in place to provide timely and relevant assistance to DRC supported operations around the world. The Advisor is also part of the Migration technical matrix team, which comprises both technical advisors at HQ and regional offices and delegates at regional and country levels.
The Advisor works closely with other relevant colleagues at DRC HQ (Copenhagen), regional and country offices as well as with the International Federation of the Red Cross Red Crescent (IFRC), the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and Host National Societies’ (HNSs) staff and volunteers in the field. The Advisor can deploy on surge missions for up to 2 months per year including short term missions throughout the year up to 30-40 % of the time.
Your main tasks include:
- Provide technical support and quality-assurance to DRC supported programmes and responses (e.g., assessments, program design, monitoring, reviews) with concern to migration and protection, including protection, gender, and inclusion (PGI), remotely or through field missions
- Act as the DRC HQ focal point for the Danish MFA funded consortium Pathways to Protection (P2P) Programme in the technical areas of migration and protection
- Support relevant tool and guideline development to meet operational needs in migration and protection programming
- Plan and support capacity-development and training of staff (DRC and partners) to ensure that DRC can develop and implement quality migration/displacement and protection interventions that follow industry standards and best practice
Surge / deployments as needed and when possible, both to DRC country operations or for wider Movement actions. Travel expected up to 30-40% of the time.
- Support the development of relevant strategies, policies, position papers, and technical frameworks in the areas of migration and protection
- Contribute to learning across migration programmes, including coordinating the DRC global technical team meetings (online and in person)
- Position DRC as a strong and committed partner in the Movement within Migration and Protection, e.g. by participating in technical working groups and forums with both RC Movement and external stakeholders
- Coordinate and seek joint initiatives with RC Movement partners
- Stay updated on recent trends, research, innovation, resources, etc. relevant to migration and displacement and protection
- Explore opportunities for new partnerships to further develop and promote migration and protection in DRC programming, including support to resource mobilization
- Support policy influencing, advocacy and humanitarian diplomacy efforts with regards to migration and protection
- Promote where possible the visibility of DRC’s work on migration and protection within and outside the RC Movement
Required Competences:
Professional:
- Hold an academic degree at master level or above in a relevant field (international law, migration studies, humanitarian etc)
- At least 5 years’ experience working in humanitarian / fragile and conflict contexts including in large scale humanitarian programmes (experience working in the Sahel region, East Africa and/or MENA an advantage)
- Strong technical skills within migration and displacement contexts and protection programming (e.g. community-based protection, SGBV prevention and response, child protection, safe referrals, etc.)
- Strong technical skills and expertise in protection, gender and inclusion mainstreaming.
- Experience in developing training materials and/or facilitating trainings of teams from diverse backgrounds
- Experience in partnerships management. Experience in Red Cross Red Crescent Movement preferred
- Strong skills in project management, project proposal development, assessments, reviews, and evaluations.
Personal:
- Be a good communicator and a team player.
- Be able to travel up to 40% of the time, including deploying on surge missions for up to 2 months per year
- Be structured, systematic and result oriented.
- Be able to facilitate processes, dialogues and engage people to use their resources effectively.
- Be flexible and able to work with people from diverse backgrounds
- Be able to go on field missions including for emergency response.
- Fluency in English. French and/or Arabic is an advantage.
